How to Order Step by Step

  1. Orders and inquiry can be emailed to Family Tree Art. We prefer contact by email, but you may call Julia at (801) 302-9164 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mountain Standard Time. We will be able to answer the questions you may have regarding your family history design. Please leave sufficient contact information, including: your name, email address, telephone number, and note your preferred contact method.
  2. We require a down payment to get your project added to our waiting list. You are then given an estimated time of completion. The final amount of your project is due when all the design work has been done and you receive a final proof of your family history design. All printing costs must be paid in full at the time your project is sent to our outsource printers. We accept PayPal or money orders.
  3. After placing your order, you will need to send your photographs to Family Tree Art. Photographs can be sent through the mail or emailed to our custom design department.
  4. After receiving your photographs, you will receive an email notification when our graphic designers begin processing your photographs and creating your unique custom poster. Family Tree Art will email your proof within 14 business days. Quality custom work takes time to produce. If you need your art done faster than two to three weeks, you can ask about our rush fee.
  5. After receiving your approval of the proof, Family Tree Art will print your custom family history poster or other family history design within 3 to 5 business days. You will receive an email notification when your order begins printing as well as a notification of when your order has shipped. Family Tree Art will keep you informed of the progress of your order along the way.

Selecting Photographs

Please read the following very carefully to ensure the highest quality.

  1. The quality of your family history poster and other projects will depend on the quality of the photographs that you send.
  2. We recommend professionally taken photographs on photographic paper.
  3. Photographs should be clear and as sharply focused as possible.
  4. Photographs can be in either color or black and white.
  5. Select photographs in which the size of the person's head is at least the size of a quarter. We can slightly enlarge a high quality photograph and still maintain great quality, however this will depend on the photograph's original quality. For the two main people in the family history poster, the head size needs to be at least 2.5” and the shoulders and chest need to be included.
  6. Professional photographs remain the property of the photographer who took the picture. If you are using a professional photograph, it is your responsibility to make sure you have permission from the photographer for your photo to be reproduced. If you are mailing us the photograph, you will need to include a signed copyright release letter from the photographer with your order. You can also email the release form to info@familytreeart.com.
  7. If you send us your photograph through the mail, Family Tree Art will return your photo with your order. If you would like to send a copy of your photographs- in order to preserve the originals, we recommend the following:
    • Using the Kodak Color Picture booth typically found at Walmart and Inkleys stores. They print on photographic paper, and the quality is pretty good. Do not enlarge or edit the picture in any way. Distortions can occur. These usually cost between $5 and $12 a sheet, and you can fit multiple pictures on a sheet.
    • Scanning the images and emailing or sending them on CD or disk. Please do not resize or compress the images. Many old photos are very small so scan your original photograph at 600 dpi so we can enlarge them if need be. Images that don't need to be enlarged can be scanned at 300 dpi. You can also scan it in black and white to make the file size smaller.
    • Digital cameras can work if the image is in focus, and no glare comes from any glass (if framed). Use this option as a last resort, and be sure to check your pictures to see if they look the same as the original. Fine detail such as hair can be lost quickly with this process. Be sure to use the highest setting possible to your camera. Digital images need to be at least 1800x1200 pixels. Lower resolution images cannot be used and cannot be raised to higher resolution. Although lower resolution images look great on the computer screen, they will produce blurry or low quality printed pictures with jagged edges.
    • Do not send laser/inkjet prints or photocopies if possible. Especially for persons near the beginning of your time line. If the only picture you have is from a printed book, make the best quality duplication you can. We do not recommend still video shots or other instant camera photographs since they usually do not take clear, high resolution photos.

Sending Photographs

  1. MAIL: For highest quality results, we recommend mailing your original photograph to Family Tree Art so that our graphic designers can use our professional scanning equipment. We will return your photographs when we ship your order. Please label all photographs clearly. Once you have spoken with your graphic designer, you can send it to the address that they specify. We recommend that you do not send images stored on CD by the photo processing company that printed your pictures. Usually, these images are stored at about 480 x 640 resolution which is too low for the high quality end result we want to achieve.
  2. EMAIL: Images should be emailed to us in jpeg (high quality) format. Email your images to Family Tree Art. Please do not resize or compress the images. Many old photos are very small so scan your original photograph at 600 dpi so we can enlarge them if need be. Images that don't need to be enlarged can be scanned at 300 dpi. You can also scan it in black and white to make the file size smaller.

Text Information

To prevent errors in spelling, please type all text. The following is the recommended format for your text:

Marie Joseph Philomene LeJeune

B. 30 Jul 1865 D. 5 Nov 1949

Nandrin, Liege, Belgium

Depending on the space available, you may continue to list ancestors even if photos are not available. It is very important that you have the correct information including spelling, birth & death dates, and places of birth. Any changes once your project has been started will be an additional fee. Because dates vary from different sources, you will need to make the final decision on what appears on the poster. Family Tree Art will not be responsible for any errors once the family tree poster or other projects have been approved, and a final pdf file (for proofing) made. You can email your text or send it in the mail. For emailing, you can use Microsoft Word, or paste your text right into the email. We recommend that you do not use bold, italics, or underlining when you email it. Send email to Family Tree Art For mailing, your designer will provide an address to send all photos and information.

Order Cancellation

You may cancel your order and receive a refund of your charges up until the time your order is being processed, meaning before our graphic artists have begun working on designing your project. You must notify us at info@familytreeart.com if you choose to cancel your order. Your order is not considered canceled until Family Tree Art has confirmed the cancellation by email. Once we have received all information needed to process your order (online/mailed in order form, photograph, and initial payment), we will notify you by email that your order is being processed. After sending you this email, if you cancel your order, you will only receive 50% of your order total back. We hope you understand that creating a custom family history tree or project takes a great deal of work from our graphic design team. This policy must be in place since processing your order requires the graphic designers at Family Tree Art to invest a great deal of time into your custom project. The full amount of your order is due on the final okay of the project. After your family history tree order has been printed, you will not be able to cancel your order or receive a refund on any portion of your order.
