Family History Tip of the Month
--by Steve Blodgett, Accredited Genealogist

The Family History Library in Salt Lake City is the 4th most popular tourist attraction in Utah. Visitors from every state and nearly every country come regularly. Many spend their entire vacation time in the library, savoring each minute, feverishly trying to find just one more ancestor before they have to leave. The network of local Family History Centers throughout the world has prepared many of them for their visit in Salt Lake City, but many are not aware of these centers.

Oddly many people in Utah and Salt Lake rarely take advantage of the resources available there. Their website at FamilySearch.org has two very important resources to help you decide if you need to come to the library.

#1 is Search the Family History Library Catalog. Most of the records in the Family History Library are on microfilm in the library. The records are cataloged under the name of the place where the records were originally recorded. The catalog will show you library call numbers for all of the records of every place where records have been microfilmed or gathered into the library. There is no charge for using the library.

#2 is Find a Family History Center near you. The addresses of all Family History Centers are shown. Microfilms can be ordered at local Family History centers. There is charge to order copies of microfilms, and you have to wait for the films to be delivered. Many people come to Salt Lake to avoid the charges and waiting for films.

Here is a quiz to test your knowledge:

  1. What percentage of names shown in the records in the Family History Library are searchable on-line? a. 5% b. 25% c. 50%
  2. What percentage of the records in the Family History Library are on microfilm? a. 20% b. 60% c. 90%
  3. What percentage of the records in the Family History Library can be ordered in local Family History Centers? a. 25% b. 50% c. 75%

Answers: 1 a, 2 c, 3 c.

A Simple Way to Get Better Scans
--by Wayne Fulton, www.scantips.com

This is a very standard scanner technique to correct and improve image contrast, and is applicable to scanning both prints and film. The technique uses the Histogram tool available in your scanner's TWAIN driver, and is called Setting the Black and White Points. It is an essential technique used for Color or Gray scans. It is simply the way a scanner is operated. It is easy, and it can make a big difference to better scans. Other improvements are also described, like brightening the midrange tones, and using the Unsharp Mask filter for sharpening photographic images.
